Weaving Heirlooms of Success

Patrick Uyguangco has been in public service even before he graduated from Xavier University with a degree in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Government Management at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. Today, he is now pursuing is passion for the arts as the creative director of Tinabuan Arts and Crafts, a small enterprise that was founded by his mother, social and cultural entrepreneur Esmera Uyguangco Gabutina.

Tinabuan Arts and Crafts started because of the mission to provide employment opportunities to the community of Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental. Through this business, the abaca industry was revived where farmers and rebel returnees in the mountains of Lagonglong plant and harvest these abaca fibers. Women in the community then weave these into sinamay and hinabul.

As its creative director, Patrick is faced with many challenges including how can they further harness the potentials of the workers, materials and environment that would then produce products that can compete in the global market. He is also challenged in finding a niche for the company’s offerings in the already saturated market for abaca products.

Then came the Kapatid Mentor ME program, he enrolled and benefited a lot from Modules 1 to 3 which tackled entrepreneurial mind-setting and values formation, product development and proper marketing.

Now, Tinabuan Arts & Crafts produces a wide variety of products, from bags, table runners and placemats, home décors, corporate giveaways, floral arrangements, and even local Christmas trees with creative twists and treats using abaca cloth, dried wild flowers and grass, dried fruits and vegetables, cotton, paper and aluminium wire. Through all these efforts, the company has survived the challenges they faced.

For Patrick, KMME is like a big brother – somebody who is always there. He believes that the program will help a large number of entrepreneurs and will lead them all to prosperity.
