[Kapatid Mentor ME Program Mentees’ Stories] Finding Success in Agribusiness

Agriculture has always been in Samuel Potante’s root for years. After quitting as a seaman, he engaged in agribusiness. His hobby of tendering and pasturing cows and carabaos, milk became their main source of income which demands for patience and hardwork.

Luckily, being the chairman of Gen. Trias Dairy Raisers MPC, he was chosen to be a mentee of the Go Negosyo and DTI’s Kapatid Mentor ME Program. From there, he was able to acquire additional knowledge and training on how to run a business and their cooperative.

With the vision to work towards inclusive growth and good opportunities, the Gen. Trias Dairy Raisers Multi-Purpose Cooperative was established in August 2005.

The conceptualization of the cooperative was made possible through the collaboration of the local government of General Trias, Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) of General Trias, Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) and 44 farmers with an initial share capital of approximately P15,000.

It is also the first cooperative in the Province of Cavite that was engaged in processing of dairy products from buffalo milk such as fresh milk, flavoured milk, white cheese, pastillas, yoghurt, milk-o-gel, ice candy, ice cream and mozzarella cheese. The business aims is to help farmers increase their income and improve local supply of milk in the City of General Trias and nearby provinces. At present, the cooperative has 255 members and is continually increasing assets of more than 5 million from the year 2006 to 2009.

As of now, Samuel and his team are making an effort to increase their sales and production. Also, they are formulating and developing products through proper labelling, packaging materials, and additional manpower.

For Samuel, KMME serves as an opportunity and a blessing for all aspiring and budding entrepreneurs who aims to be successful in their business ventures.
